About CSIL

Since 1985, the Computer Science Instructional Lab has supported teaching and learning at UChicago with computing resources and student-led instruction. CSIL is entirely student-run, with the exception of our director Cosmos.

Lab Reservations

CSIL operates five labs on the first floor of Crerar. They are a mix of macOS labs, Ubuntu labs, and flexible-use spaces. Each lab seats up to 20 students and includes a ceiling-mounted projector. Check our lab schedule and contact us to reserve a lab.

02

Minicourses

Each quarter, CSIL hosts free, student-led minicourses on systems, software, and related topics. Sessions are informal and open to all; no registration is required. See the minicourses page for more details.

03

User Support

CSIL tutors provide support for our macOS, Ubuntu, and Windows workstations, as well as our projectors, scanners, and 3D printers. Visit the software and hardware pages for a list of supported tools and equipment.

04

Equipment Rentals

CSIL offers free short-term rentals for common accessories: chargers, adapters, headphones, mice, and more. Details and current inventory are available on the hardware page. Pick up and return items at the tutor desk during opening hours.

Contact Us

For questions about labs, equipment, and minicourses, please contact CSIL staff rather than Cosmos. Staff contact information are listed on the staff page.
